Not every solar system needs batteries. Solar panels and batteries do different jobs. 

Solar PV generates electricity when the sun is available. Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESS, store electricity for later use. The two technologies can work together, but they do not always need to be installed together. 

A business should consider batteries when there is a specific use case. 

1. Backup Power

Battery storage can support selected loads during outages. This is especially relevant where downtime affects production, refrigeration, irrigation, security, IT systems or process control. 

The key question is not simply, “How big should the battery be?” 

The better question is: 

“Which loads must continue running, and for how long?” 

Backing up an entire site may be expensive. Protecting critical loads may be more commercially sensible. 

3. Peak Shaving

Some businesses pay charges linked to maximum demand. Batteries can discharge during short periods of high demand, reducing the peak drawn from the grid. 

This can be relevant for sites with machinery start-up peaks, processing loads, refrigeration cycles or other demand spikes.
